Attack on Titan episode 21 Crushing Blow
With new hope, comes new loss.
Ok, how does this anime keep being so damn perfect? How does it make you cry for characters you barely know and have only been in, at most, three episodes?!? I don't want to jump the gun before it ends, but as far as it's gone now, I have to say this is my new favorite anime. I keep thinking, if I had to recommend any anime, it would be this one! And it isn't even over yet. It must be some kind of magic. This episode in particular affected me greatly.
How to explain why this anime is perfect? Every episode is like watching a nail-biting thriller. You can't wait to see what's going to happen next. Every episode ends in a cliffhanger and it just keeps you gasping for more. It's because somehow, the show transmits the feeling of desperation so much that every character, no matter how small or short-lived is a precious person. There are so few humans left, the cause is so futile, that you have to root for every single person that is fighting. Every action they take has such a high cost. The music swells up, dramatic and, at times, so sweetly sorrowful, that the tears just can't help but flow. The animation is so stark and defined, it illustrates with every scene the violence and horror of their world.
In this particular episode, one choice that is made, with such hope and such good intention, just ends in futility and loss. It isn't that you identify or love one particular character, even though there are some good ones. It's that you identify with the plight itself, with the show as a whole. It's amazing. Usually, I would despise a show like that, because I love character driven stories. But, done perfectly as this anime is; it becomes so much more beautiful than any single character could ever be. Their fight is your fight.
Seriously, I can't recommend this anime highly enough. I know I've already done a post on it, but I'll probably end up doing more before it's over at episode 25. I don't know if I'll have to start reading the manga or not since the first season is going to end. It's always an agonizing decision. But if I do start reading it, I'll write more about it definitely after this season ends.
